Spoilers for Avengers 4 ahead

Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War is in the middle of production right now, set for release in 2018. With a huge ensemble cast, pretty much everyone who’s anyone within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will assemble in the fight against Thanos, who is trying to gather the Infinity Stones. The list of characters includes the Guardians of the Galaxy, who will join forces with Marvel characters such as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Loki.

Following on from Infinity War, Marvel also have a release date set for another Avengers film to arrive in 2019. While this project was originally titled Avengers: Infinity War Part 2, the working title was since changed to Avengers 4, which had fans wondering if it would be connected to Infinity War in any way, or if it would be a standalone movie.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige recently explained that the project’s title would remain a mystery, as to reveal it would spoil an aspect of the storyline, but it seems as though we might now know the title after all. Speaking to the BBC’s Lizo Mzimna at the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 premiere, Saldana said that she had finished filming the “first part” (Infinity War), but that the cast had to “go back for Gauntlet” later in the year. Check the video, via Twitter, below.

The words Infinity Gauntlet might not mean much to some, but many Marvel fans will immediately recognize it in relation to the Infinity Stones. If Avengers: Infinity War focuses on Thanos (Josh Brolin) trying to assemble all the Infinity Stones, then it would appear as though he succeeds, and manages to create the Infinity Gauntlet. Therefore, Avengers 4/ Infinity Gauntlet would focus on the rest of the MCU characters trying to stop him from using them and destroying the whole galaxy. It’s easy to see why Feige didn’t want that title spoiled.

Of course. that title is far from confirmed, and it could be that ‘Gauntlet’ is merely a working title…but let’s be real, it seems as though it’s a very likely possibility. And while that story could be told in one movie, telling it across two would mean much more detail and opportunity given for character development. It’s probably easy to predict a happy ending, with Thanos and the Gauntlet being destroyed, but there could well be heavy losses along the way.

UPDATE: Following on from Saldana’s comments, in an interview with Yahoo Movies, James Gunn dismissed the idea that Avengers 4 might be called Infinity Gauntlet, saying:

“It’s not the title. My guess is that Zoë just misspoke. I’ll talk to Zoë today, but I would imagine that is just Zoë misspeaking and saying Infinity Gauntlet instead of Infinity War.”

Now. we’ll leave it to you to decide whether Gunn was just exercising damage control, or whether the movie really does have another title, but it’s our guess that if it was called Infinity Gauntlet, it won’t be any more. There’s also the possibility that Gauntlet is merely a working title, and the real, more spoiler-ey title (as Feige said), is yet to come.

Avengers: Infinity War is set for release on May 4th, 2018, with Avengers 4 arriving on May 3rd, 2019.
