The rumors regarding the sequel to Trainspotting have been rampant for years, but now things are finally underway and the movie is filming in Scotland as we speak. If you came of age in the 1990s and somehow missed Trainspotting, we don’t even know what to do with you. The film, released in 1996 and based in the mid-80s, was pretty groundbreaking for its utterly raw yet tongue-in-cheek look at heroin addiction, the trials of trying to clean up and the underbelly of urban Scottish life among those stuck in that drug abusing cycle. It was also the first time Americans had a really good look at Ewan McGregor, who was only 25 when it came out. It wouldn’t be the last.
Since then T2: Trainspotting 2 has been one of those sequels trying to happen but just couldn’t for any number of reasons from scheduling to temporary strife between McGregor and director Danny Boyle. That occurred when Boyle cast Leonardo DiCaprio in The Beach over McGregor.
Now the first set images have emerged as filming takes place in Edinburgh featuring McGregor reprising his role as Rent Boy and Johnny Lee Miller returning as Sick Boy. Ewen Bremner and Robert Carlyle will also be back for the sequel.
T2: Trainspotting 2 is based on Irvine Welsh’s novel Porno, which is the follow-up to Trainspotting. It focuses on the group ten years later and deals with the porn business rather than rampant heroin addiction. As yet, an official synopsis for the film has not been released so there is no telling how close it’ll keep to the source material. However much time has passed, we hope it hasn’t dampened that daring spirit the first film was made with with its shocking visuals and devil-may-care attitude. Although seeing a 45-year old McGregor diving into toilet might be a bit much.
T2: Trainspotting 2 is expected to hit theaters in the UK January 27, 2017, and in the US February 10, 2017.
