According to Heroic Hollywood, a reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise is set for release late next year. Earlier this week, Warner Bros. revealed plenty of new release dates. Among those was an untitled event film, set for release on 6 October, 2017. Rumour has it that film will be another take on Lara Croft.

In Heroic Hollywood’s story Umberto Gonzalez said, “I got tipped off that the event film is the Tomb Raider reboot, called The Tomb Raider. Exactly a month ago today, Warner Bros. registered the domain”

This isn’t the first we’ve heard about a possible new attempt at making a Tomb Raider film. Last month, Deadline reported that Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) was in the running to play Lara Croft.

The actress followed up those rumours at the Empire Awards, saying that there have been discussions. “I’m waiting for someone to say, ‘I want you, let’s do it’,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

Lara Croft has appeared on screen twice before, played by Angelina Jolie, though both films were poorly received by fans and critics alike. After the 2013 reboot of the video game series, focus switched to having a new take on the character on the big screen. Given how well the video game reboot has gone down, surely this is as good a time as any to attempt a movie adaptation.

Ridley showed in her breakout role that she’s capable of playing this character. The only stumbling block would be her availability, given that she’s off shooting Star Wars Episode VIII right now. However, the actress doesn’t see that as being a problem.

She wouldn’t just be required to take on a new role but possibly a brand new franchise. Ridley clearly believes she could do it, saying, “Absolutely, I’m trying to fill up my calendar.”

If we are going to see a new Tomb Raider in less than 18 months, expect more information to come forward soon.
