It’s been a long time coming, but the Superman prequel series Krypton is finally a go at SyFy. The NBCUniversal-owned network announced late Monday that the pilot has officially been greenlit.

Krypton will be set two generations before the titular planet was destroyed. The main character will be Kal-El/Superman’s grandfather, who is trying to redeem the House of El’s reputation and the planet itself from chaos. Maybe Jor-El’s father has better luck at convincing his fellow Kryptonians to listen to what he has to say.

The series is being executive produced by David S. Goyer, whose name has been on just about everything DC Comics-related these days. He worked on Man of Steel, the Dark Knight trilogy and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Sleepy Hollow‘s Damian Kindler was tapped to be showrunner and Colm McCarthy of Peaky Blinders is directing the pilot. Goyer wrote the teleplay and story with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles‘ Ian Goldberg. Phew, that’s a lot of geek street cred.

Krypton is one of the most iconic stories in the comic book universe,” Bill McGoldrick, Executive Vice President, Scripted Content, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, said in a statement. “In the talented hands of David S. Goyer and the DC Entertainment/Warner Horizon Television team, this exciting Syfy project will take viewers back to Superman’s home to show how the timeless legend began.”

Krypton has been in the works for years, but it was only a few weeks ago that we heard SyFy was close to putting in a pilot order. Goyer confirmed to ComicBook.com in October 2015 that the show will even connect to Man of Steel.

“We scratched the surface in the film and, for me, that was the allure,” Goyer said at the time. “I was always fascinated, as a kid, with the books about Krypton and they’ve only shaded in a tiny bit, so we’ll learn about the politics of the world. We’ll learn about the culture, the art, all the different guilds.”

Of course, Batman also has his own prequel series, Gotham, but Krypton will be much different. Gotham still features Bruce Wayne, but Krypton is set much further in the past.
