The Star Wars Celebration 2017 is underway in Orlando, and fans have waited through the night to be present for the Star Wars 40th Anniversary Panel, hosted by Warwick Davis. In a surprise appearance, George Lucas took to the stage, and other guests included Hayden Christensen, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams, and Peter Mayhew. Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford also put in an appearance; this marking Ford’s first Star Wars Celebration.

Of course, such a monumental event couldn’t pass without paying tribute to the late Carrie Fisher; a cornerstone of the Star Wars franchise and an actress admired and loved by many across the world. LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy, and Lucas himself, started proceedings, with Lucas describing Fisher’s strength of character as well as her determination and thoughtfulness as an actress:

“She was a princess, a senator, and she played a part that was very smart, and she had to hold her own against tow big lugs, two big goofballs. She was the boss, it was her war. When Carrie was the character, she was very smart, very bold, very thoughtful. There really wasn’t much of a question. There aren’t that many people like her. There’s one in a billion.”

The audience were then treated to a touching video montage of Fisher, which spanned her work across all Star Wars movies. The footage was carefully chosen, and really highlights her wonderfully fun personality, as well as her talent on screen. Fisher was an icon, and leaves behind a legacy of work. You can watch the full video tribute below.

Lourd gave a little more insight into her mom’s love for playing Leia, saying “My mom often said she didn’t know where Princess Leia ended and Carrie Fisher began,” and it’s fair to say that most fans felt the same way. Fisher’s loss was felt across the globe, and it will be bittersweet to see her on screen in Star Wars: Episode VIII- The Last Jedi. Fisher will also appear in Star Wars Episode IX, it has been revealed, using previously filmed footage.

The Star Wars Celebration continues with The Last Jedi panel tomorrow, April 14th.
