During an interview with ABC’s Nightline, Robert Downey, Jr. has expressed interest in reprising the role of Tony Stark in a potential Iron Man 4.
With no planned movies in the future from Marvel Studios, it seemed that 2013’s Iron Man 3 would be the last in a series of Iron Man films for Robert Downey, Jr. Only last month he stated there was no plan on reprising his role in a standalone film. However, his recent comments are raising the eyebrows of fans who are still holding out hope for seeing Iron Man in one more solo film. “I feel like I could do one more,” he said.
Iron Man 3 marked the beginning of Marvel’s ‘Phase 2’, which followed the story of Stark after the ‘Incident’ in New York — events which took place in Avengers the previous year. Although the film was largely criticised by fans and critics, Downey still remains an important entity for Marvel, who at this stage has shown to pay over $50 million for his participation in the MCU. As ‘Phase 3’ starts with next month’s Civil War, there are currently no plans for an Iron Man 4, but with the great influence Downey has, who knows what we might be seeing in the future? It seems almost impossible to imagine anyone else filling his shoes, and Marvel Studios will no doubt want to keep their key player for as long as possible.
Robert Downey, Jr. is set to reprise Tony Stark in Captain America: Civil War and 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, as well as both parts of Avengers: Infinity War in 2018 and 2019. These films alone will mark his tenth appearance as Tony Stark in the 11-year MCU history. Even without another solo film, that certainly is an impressive feat for the man who is considered responsible for propelling Marvel Studios into the mainstream world of cinema.
