After the success of The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception and Interstellar it would seem Christopher Nolan can do anything he wants in Hollywood. So when it was announced late last year that his next movie would be a historical epic based on the World War 2 Dunkirk Evacuation many people were intrigued with how Nolan would handle a true story.

Well, we won’t have to wait too long to find out as Warner Bros. has officially announced that Dunkirk (now the official name of the movie) has gone into principal photography and the cameras are rolling. To be specific, those cameras are going to be IMAX and 65mm with the production spanning Holland, the United Kingdom, Los Angeles and Paris where the movie is currently filming.

French photographer, Pierre Volot has managed to take photos on location of Dunkirk involving the sets and Christopher Nolan interacting with the cast. As you can see from these pictures, this is going to be a big-scale production. These are just a handful of the photos and I highly encourage you to check out Volot’s Twitter account where you can find many more.

In the Warner Bros. press release, we also got casting announcements. Not only do we have Nolan regulars Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy, but also newcomers Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Fionn Whitehead, Aneurin Barnard, James D’Arcy, Jack Lowden, Barry Keoghan and Tom Glynn-Carney. We also got confirmation of One Direction’s Harry Styles having a role in the movie, which he (famously?) got his hair cut for.

For those of you who don’t know, the evacuation of the French city of Dunkirk took place in 1940 where nearly 440,000 soldiers were rescued by a fleet of 800 boats which had been hastily assembled after German forces invaded. This moment in history is also known as “Operation Dynamo”.

Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk opens July 2017.
