Netflix App Reveals ‘The Punisher’ Release Window

Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders are all bound to be absolutely fantastic. But the wait for those seems like an afterthought compared to The Punisher’s impending series. Those all have extended teasers of some sort, and we know they’re release dates are coming soon. Frank Castle’s return is less tangible.

At the Television Critics Association several weeks ago, Netflix boss Ted Sarandos revealed the next seasons of Jessica Jones and Daredevil won’t arrive until 2018. That’s fine, we’ll be patient. However, he also announced The Punisher series starring Jon Bernthal shouldn’t be expected before then. Sadness. But wait; eagle eyed fans have spotted something that may debunk Sarandos’ previous statement. Redditor Spiderbyte came across a page in the Netflix app, which seems to confirm Marvel’s The Punisher may actually begin streaming in 2017.

This listing also offers up the show’s first official synopsis:

“After the murder of his family, Frank Castle is both haunted and hunted. In the criminal underworld, he’ll become known as The Punisher.”

Of course, this may be a placeholder of sorts, akin to what Amazon does with game releases. For instance, Kingdom Hearts III is listed to release on December 30 of this year. A laughable date when considering that title likely won’t launch until 2019 at the earliest. However, we expect Netflix isn’t taking things that far. As of now, the creative team behind the series has yet to be publicly announced, so it’s possible some aspects of the show are already taking shape.

What’s holding back Jessica Jones and Daredevil are those characters’ involvement in The Defenders. The team up show begins production soon, with a release coming next year. Frank Castle’s participation is still an unknown factor. Though even if he hops aboard the save New York train, it’s doubtful he’ll be so integral throughout the series that his own show would have to be put on hold.

Perhaps Jon Bernthal’s Punisher will begin wreaking havoc on the criminal underbelly of Hell’s Kitchen sooner than we were led to believe.
