To say there’s an abundance of excitement surrounding Joss Whedon helming a Batgirl film is an understatement. He’s bound to do the character proud. However, that didn’t stop the news from being surprising. After all, Whedon not only directed the first two Avengers films, he’s also one of the architects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As such, his move to Warner Bros. seems like a shrewd and calculated move on the studio’s part. But there’s definitely one person that wasn’t cut off guard by the report. Marvel’s Kevin Feige has been in the know for quite some time.

As Marvel Studios’ gears up for the release of Guardian’s of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the studio opened its doors to the press. During the rare look inside, studio-head Kevin Feige sat for a series of questions. Joss Whedon joining WB to possibly direct and write a Batgirl film became one topic of discussion. Feige’s response to Whedon’s new venture is as follows (via THR):

“He called a couple months ago, which he didn’t have to do and was super cool of him and super nice of him,” said Feige. “And we couldn’t be more supportive. We want to see a Joss Whedon Batgirl film be awesome.”

Because Whedon was so close in development of the MCU, it’ll be interesting to see how he’ll bring that expertise to the DCEU. Should we expect him to eventually take on a larger role outside of helming Batgirl?

For now, few details about the character’s impending solo are known. However, WB is reportedly looking to adapt some of her New 52 arc from Gail Simone’s run. Casting for Barbara Gordon, at the time of writing, has yet to be announced.

While we await more news on Batgirl, there’s plenty to look forward to this year from the DCEU. Wonder Woman hits theaters on June 2 and Justice League releases months later on November 17.
