Joss Whedon to Begin Work on Batgirl Film Next Year

Joss Whedon is still hard at work on wrapping up Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Therefore, the Buffy creator and former Marvel filmmaker won’t appear at SDCC. After production is complete, the expectation is that Whedon will begin putting things together for Batgirl’s impending standalone. Aside from a few teases from the man himself, as he’ll write and direct, very little is known about the film. However, Geoff Johns’ recent interview with IGN (via Heroic Hollywood) may shed light on what Whedon will be up to in the coming months.

In talking DCEU films, Johns said the following:

“But for Batman what I will say is that Batman is more than just Batman and, you know, it’s been way too long since we’ve seen, you know, an expansion of that universe, and Batgirl – we are doing Batgirl with Joss Whedon, it’s going to be super exciting. He’s going to start that next year, and that’s just the start.”

Exactly what he means by “[Whedon’s] going to start that next year” is hard to determine. Is he going to begin writing next year? Is the script already complete and filming is to kick off next year? Both points in the latter question are extremely doubtful. But Warner Bros. did just add two untitled 2020 films to their DCEU release slate. Might one of them be Batgirl’s solo venture? It is not impossible, especially if Whedon is getting to work on it next year (in whatever form that entails). Another possibility is that a Batgirl film could be ready by 2019. That year is looking pretty empty as far as DCEU releases are concerned.
At any rate, details on casting are still very much unknown. Perhaps that news will drop at next year’s San Diego Comic-Con, along with an official release date.
