Jared Leto’s Joker to Appear in Suicide Squad 2 & Gotham City Sirens

Tucked in the report from Deadline that revealed the Joker’s origin story will be explored in a film independent of the DCEU were other interesting details. Jared Leto will reprise his role as the Clown Prince in both Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens. His return in the latter isn’t especially surprising, when we consider that Harley’s meant to lead the film. However, Joker appearing in Suicide Squad’s sequel, while not improbable, is a bit of a head-scratcher.

Will Joker’s Suicide Squad 2 role be akin to his cameo in the first film? Or might he have a larger stake in the game? With details on the film’s plot publicly unknown, there’s no way of knowing which direction the sequel will take. The film is also still without a director, and it’s unclear which cast members from the 2016 blockbuster are returning to the franchise.

Gotham City Sirens

Gotham City Sirens is even more of a mystery. Aside from Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, and now Leto’s Joker, nothing official about the film has come to light. Characters such as Catwoman and Poison Ivy are expected to star, but no one involved with the project is talking. Because GCS was missing from WB’s slate of seemingly near-future DCEU films, information may remain scarce for a while.

Considering the DCEU’s been giving equal focus to its villains and heroes, we’re left to wonder what it’s all building toward. Of course, Darkseid is the most imminent threat, but what happens when he and his Parademons are sent back to Apokolips in defeat? All of these villain-centric tales could lead to a heroes/villains mashup down the road. Something along the lines of Forever Evil, perhaps?
