With Spider-Man’s latest big-screen incarnation making his debut in Captain America: Civil War later this month (at least, in the UK), it looks like we might have found out the title of his solo movie coming next year.

The BBC (via Empire) noticed that Sony had registered the domain name “SpiderManHomecomingTheMovie.com.” While this could be simply an early title for the movie, this same method was used to reveal the final title of another Sony production, Skyfall, so the chances are that this one will stay the same too.

Naturally, the title has significance in Marvel lore. ‘Homecoming’ is the name of a comics storyline featured in 1984’s Amazing Spider-Man #252. It sees Spider-Man return to New York after fighting the intergalactic Secret Wars. While this story hasn’t been adapted to the screen yet, the movie could see Spidey resume his normal life after being part of Civil War.

The ‘Homecoming’ comic also features two other juicy elements. Firstly, it contains appearances from Iron Man and Captain America which gives us hope that Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. will turn up in the film. The other is that it sees the first time Spidey wears his black suit on the job. Fans will know that this suit is eventually revealed to be the alien symbiote that becomes Venom. We know Sony is planning a Venom spin-off, so it’s likely this one will set up that movie; although the film may or may not exist within the same movie universe. The title might also be an allusion to the fact that Spidey is returning to Marvel, after the studio made a deal with Sony to introduce him to the MCU.

Spider-Man: Homecoming, if that is indeed the title, will be directed by Jon Watts. Tom Holland will star as Peter Parker/Spider-Man while Zendaya is to co-star alongside him as a character called Michelle. It is booked in for release on July 7th 2017.
