New ‘Injustice 2’ Story Trailer Teases Superman’s Rise to Power

“Hope isn’t enough to save the world,” Superman says about midway through Injustice 2’s latest trailer. They’re hard words to hear being voiced by the Man of Steel. Even harder is knowing that, at this juncture in the Injustice storyline, he actually believes it. NetherRealm’s new look at the sequel highlights Superman’s rise to power. We still aren’t being told much about the narrative itself, but there’s plenty to garner from the video below. Apparently, the trailer, entitled Shattered Alliances Part 1, is but the first in a series of story teasers.

One thing that definitively receives confirmation is that Kal and Kara aren’t on the best of terms. Following the release of Injustice 2’s original teaser last year, theories began to surface that the two cousins were on opposing sides. Here, it doesn’t seem Supergirl is in line with her kin’s idea of a regime.

What’s especially interesting is who’s pitted against one another when gameplay is shown off. Of course, Batman and Supes are on opposing sides — no curiosities there. But is there a reason we keep seeing Wonder Woman and Supergirl duke it out in trailers? Now that the latter seems to be confirmed as not one in agreement with the Regime, might Wonder Woman be on the side of Superman? Those two together often make for a formidable powerhouse, and their ideologies are typically in alignment. Anyone else getting Kingdom Come vibes?

We also get to see a bit more of Cyborg and Blue Beetle in action. Both look great and they too are shown in combat against one another. It will be fascinating to see whether the two heroes fall on the side of Batman or Superman. Tell us your thoughts and theories in the comments below.

Injustice 2 launches on PS4 and Xbox One on May 16.
