In preparation for the highly-anticipated Independence Day: Resurgence, 20th Century Fox has posted a (fictitious) United World News Special video exploring the aftermath of the infamous War of 1996, as depicted in the original Independence Day. You can watch it below.
The video features appearances by Jeff Goldblum’s David Levinson and Jessie Usher’s Dylan Hiller, as well as new characters Dylan Hiller, Rain Lao and Jake Morrison. Goldblum’s Levinson states:
“We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.”
Despite its modest 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the first Independence Day earned an impressive $817 million at the box office, making it the highest grossing film of 1996 as well as maintaining the number one spot among alien invasion flicks, according to Box Office Mojo. It has since become something of a cult classic and is widely considered to be the film that cemented Will Smith as one of the most profitable action stars in the past 20 years.
Independence Day: Resurgence appropriately crashes into cinemas on June 24, the week before the actual Independence Day holiday in the US (and 20 years after the original premiered). The cast includes Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward.
