Star Trek Beyond, the latest installment in the franchise, is due out in just a few months – though you would be forgiven for not knowing that, seeing as we have seen so little of the film so far. Thankfully, star Idris Elba has given us a little bit more to go on, in particular concerning the nature of his character in the movie.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Elba confirmed that the villain’s name is Krall, that he will be from a new species in the Star Trek universe (definitely not a Gorn) and that his relationship with Kirk is like “Jaws and Dory.” Read a snippet of what the actor had to say below:

What’s interesting about [Krall] is that he has a real beef with what the Enterprise stands for. Krall’s a character who’s deeply steeped in hatred — in my opinion, a well-earned hatred — for the Federation. It felt quite political. There’s a relatability to what’s happening in our world. Not everybody’s happy with what everybody calls the good guys.

Krall is predatory. He’s not one for big speeches. He is one for going to get what he wants. If that means having to do it himself, outside of his army, he is not afraid to do that.

In the interview, he also proves his Star Trek knowledge by confusing Captain Kirk with Clark Kent. We are sure that endeared him to Trekkies everywhere…

What else we know about Star Trek Beyond includes the fact that Fast and Furious’ Justin Lin is taking over from J.J. Abrams as director, and that the script is co-written by Simon Pegg (who will likewise reprise his role as Scotty). Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the Enterprise crew are all back as well. The movie is set to hit cinemas on July 22nd.
