Justice League: Part One begins filming early next month and while it was never explicitly said, there was an assumption that at least one Green Lantern would be involved. That was a faulty assumption.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Batman v Superman¬†and Justice League producer, Charles Roven said, “there’s a real opportunity [with Green Lantern]. We didn’t do a great job on that first Green Lantern movie… I guess I can say to the Green Lantern fans: if they can be patient with us, I think they’ll be really happy.”
It was previously revealed that the Green Lantern Corps would get a standalone film, of the same name, in 2020. As stated above, a GL was expected to be introduced in the first Justice League outing; however, a GL may not hit the DC Cinematic Universe¬†until the second Justice League movie. “So there’s the possibility that he may or may not be in Justice League 2,”¬†Roven divulged. He suggested they have enough characters to introduce for now and the best place for a GL introduction may be in “Justice League 2, or barring that, a movie after.”
The news is unfortunate, but understandable. Roven also stated¬†in his comments to EW that Green Lantern is deserving of the reverence Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman are set to receive. He is certainly right. Getting the DCCU ready for the cosmic side of DC’s superhero saga will be no easy task. All the time necessary should be taken to ensure GL’s next big screen appearance is one capable of living up to the character’s glory in the comics.
If you are looking for something to fill the sudden dread of having to wait for a Green Lantern big screen portrayal, Green Lantern: The Animated Series will do more that suffice. As you binge watch the series, keep it locked to GeekFeed for everything Green Lantern related.
