Just announced at CinemaCon, James Cameron is developing an incredible four (that’s FOUR) Avatar sequels. In order the films will be out Christmas 2018, Christmas 2020, Christmas 2022 and Christmas 2023. The twist in this is that Cameron had previously said he only planned on two or three sequels.
The Hollywood Reporter quotes Cameron:
“We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic process. I’ve been working the last couple of years with a team of four top screenwriters to design the world of Avatar going forward: The characters, the creatures, the environment, the new cultures.”
“So far, the art I’m seeing, is in pure imagination, really far beyond the first film,” he said. “It’s going to be a true epic saga.”
Avatar, the highest grossing film of all-time, was pioneering in its utilization of 3D technology when it was released in 2009. The film also enjoyed several accolades including the Oscar for Best Picture.
Cameron is currently working on the first sequel, which no doubt will take a lot of time in development and post-production if they’re to mirror the same spectacular effects seen in the original. Returning to their lead roles are Zoe Saldana (Neytiri) and Sam Worthington (Jake Sully). While Sigourney Weaver and Steven Lang are slated to return as well, we’re not entirely sure how given that both their characters were killed in the first film.
