A few months ago it was announced that largely comedic actress Elizabeth Banks would play the villainous Rita Repulsa in Liongate’s movie reboot of 90s kids favourite Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. It seemed something of an odd casting choice, but judgement was held until we got more info on her take on the character. Well, now we have our first glimpse of her in costume. So, how does she look?

Power Rangers fans will immediately note that Banks’ outfit is far removed from the original Rita, as played by Machiko Soga in the Japanese-made Super Sentai footage and dubbed over by Barbara Goodson for Mighty Morphin. For comparison, here’s classic Rita:

Pretty different, huh? We’re sure it will grow on us, but right now we kind of miss the wild silver hair (yep, look again, that’s not a hat). Mind you, it was probably a good decision to ditch the weird drill-like breast plate.

People revealed the image, and also spoke to Banks. In the interview, the actress explains that she has “never played a villain before” and that she is looking forward to “world domination – and being unpredictable as a character.”

On the revised look, she said: “It’s definitely a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa.”

Most interestingly, she hinted at some changes to the character’s story as well: “We wanted to give her a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers,” she teased.

The movie, simply titled Power Rangers, stars Dacre Montgomery, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott and RJ Cyler as the Red, Yellow, Black, Pink and Blue Rangers respectively. It will be directed by Project Almanac’s Dean Israelite and is set to arrive in cinemas on March 24th 2017.
