It’s been teased for the last few days and now it has finally arrived. The first look at the latest entry into Microsoft’s Gears of War franchise is here, and it’s pretty dark. Not, “oh, my goodness, I can’t believe they did that” dark, but “is that a man running?” dark. Jokes aside, the trailer is awesome and a bit endearing.
In flashbacks, we see little JD Fenix, the protagonist of the new game, running to his father, Marcus Fenix, the protagonist of the original trilogy. Juxtaposed to this bright moment, brimming with happiness, are scenes of adult JD running in a dark forest, presumably from a “terrifying new enemy.”
Set 25 years after the events of Gears of War 3, Gears 4 follows Marcus Fenix’s son, JD (Liam McIntyre), as he abandons his place in the COG Militia and goes AWOL, due to circumstances to be revealed in the game’s campaign. Other playable characters will include JD’s best friend, Delmont Walker (Eugene Byrd), and Kait Diaz (Laura Bailey), an outsider who teams up with the two for still unknown reasons.
Gears of War 4’s cover art and release date was recently revealed, alongside news that the title would feature split-screen couch co-op across all modes, including the story campaign. Beginning April 18, players who purchased Gears of War: Ultimate Edition will gain access to the game’s multiplayer beta. The beta will then become open to Xbox Live members a week later, on April 25, and end on May 1.
Gears of War 4 hits store shelves this fall, on October 11.
