Ahead of its imminent release, the final trailer for The Mummy has arrived online. A reboot of the The Mummy franchise, this movie is said to mark the beginning of the Universal shared Monsters universe, paving the way for more movies within the genre, possibly all connecting to one another in a similar way to how the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe work.

The Mummy stars Tom Crusie, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Courtney B. Vance, and Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll. This final trailer once again highlights the remarkable special effects, as well as the thrilling storyline that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The synopsis for The Mummy reads as follows: Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

Directed by Alex Kurtzman, The Mummy is one of several monster movies in the works at Universal, all making up part of this new universe. The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein, and Van Helsing are all at various stages of development, and, given that history is rife with these sorts of legends and stories, there could be plenty more to come, too.

The key to this shared universe lies with Crowe’s Dr. Jekyll. The first look at his Mr. Hyde surfaced the other day, and though it’s not known how much of Mr. Hyde we will see in The Mummy, going forward, Kurtzman says that his character will serve as the connective tissue of the universe, paving the way for Crowe to appear in multiple other movies, as well.

The Mummy will be released on June 9th.
