‘Deadpool 2’ Will Mock Superhero Sequels Says Producer

When Deadpool released earlier in the year it was a breath of fresh air. There’s no denying that there’s a ton of superhero movies hitting our silver screens and it shows no sign of stopping. So when Deadpool entered the scene, it delivered a barrel of laughs in a self-aware superhero movie that didn’t take itself too seriously, and made a mockery of the genre it inhabits. It was the Deadpool film we deserved, and the one we needed.

So of course the sequel to the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time will continue that trend, and will take aim at the plethora of superhero sequels in its own sequel according to the film’s producer. In an interview with Slashfilm (via io9), producer Simon Kinberg said:

“I think Deadpool 2 will comment on anything that’s happening in movies today in his typical break the fourth wall style, especially in superhero movies. The sort of glut or saturation of these movies and the proliferation of sequels is definitely something we’ll play around with.”

It makes perfect sense that Deadpool 2 would reference the sheer amount of superhero sequels, more than likely comparing his own to stellar sequels like The Dark Knight. With the film grossing over $700 million dollars at the box-office on a budget of just under $60 million, can you blame 20th Century Fox for contributing to the raging fire of superhero sequels? At this year’s 42nd Annual Saturn Awards, Kinberg said in an interview that writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are close to completing the script and he expects shooting will begin on Deadpool 2 early next year.

The ultimate sense of irony would be if Deadpool 2 is rushed out as quickly as possible that it becomes a victim of the very thing the Merc with a Mouth makes a mockery of. Something tells us that’s unlikely, but even if it does, Deadpool will probably make a joke out of it so there’s always that.
