During a live Q&A on his Facebook page, James Gunn said he’s unsure about continuing with Marvel after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The filmmaker was asked what he is planning to do after Guardians and it sounds like Kevin Feige and co. want him to stay with the studio.

“Right now I really am just concerned with doing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” Gunn said. “I’m not sure what I’m going to do after this… Marvel has talked to me about continuing on. I’m not sure if that’s what I want to do or if that’s not what I want to do. I really just want to make Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 the greatest possible movie that I can, and something that’s as honest and sincere and true as it can possibly be.”

So far, no director has rounded out a trilogy of films with Marvel. Both Jon Favreau and Joss Whedon kicked off franchises by directing two films, but they stepped down before the third. Could Gunn do the same, or will he stick around for another adventure with the Guardians?

A third Guardians film seems pretty much certain at this point. The sequel was green lit before the original even hit theatres. After the commercial and critical success of the 2014 release, Marvel moved Vol. 2 up to 5 May, 2017. Right now, it’s thought that a third Guardians movie could take the 1 May, 2020 slot that Marvel claimed, assuming the second goes well.

Who would you like to see in the directors’ chair for Guardians 3? Do you want Gunn back or should Marvel install a fresh face? Adam McKay has been a name linked with Marvel for a long time, especially after he co-wrote Ant-Man. Could the Oscar nominee be the perfect choice to take over?
