Haven’t recovered yet from Captain America: Civil War? Too bad. News is already trickling in for the next great Marvel extravaganza, and we’re not talking about one of the several solo films in the bullpen right now. In a recent sit down with the Civil War directors and cast, Sky Movies broached the topic of the impending juggernaut–Avengers: Infinity War.
In the event you live under a rock and don’t know what lies ahead, Infinity War will pull so many Marvel heroes and villains into its scope it’ll make your poor little head explode. And they’re all coming under one banner (well, two) to either fight or serve one entity: Thanos, the Mad Titan. He’s that big, mean purple guy we saw in the end-credit scene in Avengers and more so as an actual presence in Guardians of the Galaxy. He’s hunting the six Infinity Stones, whose power when combined (via the Infinity Gauntlet) will render the wielder unstoppable. Given how despotic this Kree megalomaniac is, we kinda don’t want that to happen.
Unfortunately, those stones, which have remained separate and hidden for Odin knows how long, are now resurfacing at an alarming rate. So far, four have reared their little heads, though as of yet, none have actually made it to Thanos. This is not without his trying of course. Luckily for the good guys, he’s a terrible judge of character as he continuously hires other villains with their own agenda (e.g. Loki and Ronan).
As a film, this story will be a huge undertaking, to say the least. Directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War) will run the show, and they definitely have their work cut out for them. The cast was, at one time, rumored to include up to 67 characters, though the Russos have since clarified that that’s just the size of the pool they’re sampling from, not necessarily how many will actually make it to the screen.
Anthony Mackie gave it a pretty bold comparison, which may be deserved given the seemingly unstoppable success of Russo-helmed MCU films:
“It’s going to be the Star Wars of our generation. I think with Infinity War–no one has ever attempted anything like that. No other comic book franchise has ever put this many comic book characters in a movie. I think it’s going to be damn mind blowing when you see it.”
And lest you think it’s going to be all action and flair with no regard to plotline and character-development, that just isn’t likely. Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner seemed pretty convinced that a film of this magnitude is in the best possible hands with the Russo Brothers:
Renner: “Knowing the Russos…”
Olsen: “They’ll still ground it.”
Renner: “Yeah, they’ll still focus it on character so it’s not going to be too overwhelming ’cause there is going to be quite a few people in it.”

So far very few of the cast is confirmed though the film will begin principal photography, shooting back-to-back with Part 2, in November this year. We know for a fact that Chris Pratt (Star Lord/Peter Quill) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) have signed with several Avengers such as Chris Evans and Robert Downey, Jr., who have recently gone through contract negotiations to allow for more films, expected to follow. Josh Brolin, portraying Thanos, is also confirmed.
While Captain America: Civil War is freshly in theaters, Avengers: Infinity War won’t hit until May 4, 2018.
