After revealing that The Defenders starts filming this year, Charlie Cox has let even more slip about the show in an interview with Empire. He talked about how the Netflix team up builds on his solo adventures as The Man Without Fear. There are spoilers in here for Daredevil season two.
With The Defenders gearing up to shoot later this year, Cox is bound to know what role his character plays in the series. The Boardwalk Empire actor revealed just how the latest season of Daredevil got Matt Murdock ready for the crossover:
“He can’t do this alone. He’s been so adamant about being a lone wolf, about doing it himself, so I think that in order for him to get to The Defenders we needed this second season. We needed to see him be broken individually so that he can – he’s willing to form a team. The lesson that Matt has had to learn in the second season of Daredevil is that he needs help.”
By the time The Defenders rolls around, Murdock will have plenty of help. He’ll have Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist fighting alongside him, plus possibly a few more. Wait, did Cox give away just how the team comes together?
By saying that Daredevil is, “willing to form a team”, he could be hinting that the vigilante is the one who unites the heroes of Hell’s Kitchen. It would make sense, as Cox’s character is the most well known of the Netflix heroes, and the one we’ve spent the most time with.
It would also make sense if the threat they are uniting to stop was one Daredevil has faced. At the end of season two, it didn’t look like The Hand were at all beaten. They seemed to be set up ready for another appearance down the line, but Cox said there are no plans for a third season of Daredevil yet.
Could The Hand’s reappearance in The Defenders lead Matt to uniting the team? Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to find out.
