First there was the best-selling book, then the original adaptation of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, then the awful Tim Burton reboot, and now Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will be getting its own Broadway musical! Christian Borle of Something Rotten! will be playing legendary Willy Wonka. The musical is set to be based directly from the children’s tale. Here’s what director Jack O’Brien had to say about the casting choice:

Christian was the first — and in truth, perhaps the only person I could imagine to create the role of Willy: His combination of child-like fantasy, edge, mystery, and sheer star power seemed destined for this role.

Christian Borle has a deep resume which surely helped him attain the coveted role. His two Tony Awards and several film and television credits are some of the reasons Borle deserves the lead role. Some of his credits include Blackhat, The Good Wife, and Masters of Sex.

The musical’s creative team is top notch. With music and lyrics from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, and Joshua Bergasse doing the choreography, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory could easily be a critical and financial success.

What are your thoughts on the casting choice? Is Christian Borle the next great Willy Wonka? Will he surpass the performance of Gene Wilder? Only time will tell. Previews of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will begin in March 2017 at the Lunt-Fontanne. Until then, feel free to rewatch the original movie (seriously, do not watch the reboot).
