Ryan Gosling tweeted that the full trailer for Blade Runner 2049 was to land today, debuting on Good Morning America, and now here it is in all its neon-noir glory.
The film takes place thirty years after the events of Sir Ridley Scott’s retrospectively adored Science-Fiction classic, Blade Runner.
2049 stars Ryan Gosling as LAPD Officer K, who uncovers a secret which could throw what’s left of an increasingly decrepit dystopia into further decline. It’s a mystery that leads him to seek out the help of the original’s protagonist, Deckard (Harrison Ford), who has been missing for 30 years having fallen in love and absconded with Sean Young’s replicant, Rachael.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the man responsible for Sicario and Arrival, the sequel appears to be stylistically synced with the original, in terms of the stunning visuals and score. As for the plot, there’s thankfully very little to go on, although Gosling has revealed that it will be more brutal than the original, and they’ve also hinted that they’ll definitively reveal whether or not Deckard is a synthetic.
Almost 20 years in the making, a sequel novel was written, with an adapted screenplay by Stuart Hazeldine surfacing in 1997, but due to rights issues the project was shelved, and Ridley Scott appeared to find more passion in tinkering with the different cuts of the original.
Blade Runner had become one of those untouchable properties, so revered that the idea of tarnishing its genre legacy with a sequel nobody really wanted, meant that pre-production problems were always welcome. However, the involvement of Villeneuve, who appears to have a struck the perfect balance between entertainment and artistry, has made 2049 one of the most anticipated films of 2017. With this trailer, it’s easy to see why.
Blade Runner 2049 will be released by Warner Bros on October 6th 2017 and also stars Jared Leto, Dave Bautista, Robin Wright, Ana De Armas, Edward James Olmos, Lennie James and MacKenzie Davis.
