The CW has managed to make a name for itself as the home of several DC superhero shows, and now it’s added one more to the docket. The channel started out with Arrow, before bringing the likes of The Flash and Supergirl on board, as well as lesser known DC entities such as Legends of Tomorrow. All the shows have spawned vast and avid fandoms, and there’s no reason to suppose Black Lightning will be any different.

The show follows the titular character, played by Cress Williams, as he tries to give up being a superhero for the sake of his wife and their two daughters. However, crime is on the rise, courtesy of The 100 gang, thanks to Black Lightning’s absence from the streets, and eventually he has no choice but to become a vigilante once more. Though Black Lightning won’t arrive on our screens until mid-season, The CW released the first- and very impressive-trailer for the show at its upfronts presentation. Take a look, below.

Forming part of an already impressive lineup of superhero shows, the assumption might be that Black Lightning will join other Arrowverse shows, with the mother of all crossover episodes, but The CW President, Mark Pedowitz, told reporters (including CBR), that it’s not the case:

“We do not aim to do a five-way crossover. Black Lightning, at this time, is not part of the Arrowverse. It is a separate situation. But there will be a big fourth-quarter crossover with all four of the shows that are on in the fall.”

Pedowitz also hinted at something more than a superhero situation with Black Lightning, which could be a nod to the hint of powers seen in Jefferson Pierce’s daughter. As the Principal of a school, it’s going to be hard enough to keep your superhero alter-ego a secret, but if your own child starts displaying powers too? Things are going to get complicated, pretty quickly.

Black Lightning will air on The CW during the 2017-2018 season.
