Today, two, purported, photos of Nintendo’s NX controller were posted on Reddit by the user perkele37. Take a good look, because at first glance it may be mistaken for a PlayStation Vita.
The most notable aspect of the image is the controller’s lack of buttons. Perkele37 writes “this is the controller unit for the console.” It’s a “Dev-kit, so it’s not the final design, obviously.” He continues, noting that “only the upper ‘nubs’ of the sticks move. The bottom part is static (kind of like the circle pad, but it moves along the bottom ‘sphere’. The rollers on the top feel and look pretty much identical to a mouse scroll-wheel. Though I do don’t believe this will be the final design.” According to him, the controller has a 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom and is equipped with “haptic feedback, [which] feels like Apple’s ‘tatptic’ engine. Not like regular rumble.”
While this may look legitimate, and resembles some of the big N’s previous design choices, it should be taken with a grain of salt for now. According to Kotaku, when Nintendo was reached for confirmation, the gaming giant responded that they “have nothing to announce on this topic.”
Its resemblance to this December 2015 patent can’t be denied though:
By E3 this coming June, the company should be ready to talk more as they are expected to officially introduce their new product to the current console generation.
