Netflix’s controversial teen drama, 13 Reasons Why looks likely to return for a second season. The show, based on the YA book of the same name by Jay Asher, looks back at the final days of Hannah Baker, and the events that led up to her taking her own life. Hannah leaves behind 13 sides of cassette recordings, detailing the reasons she decided to die, and the show confronts issues of cyber bullying, underage drinking, and rape.

Although it only made its debut a month ago, 13 Reasons Why has already become the most tweeted about show of 2017. Netflix doesn’t release viewing figures, but undoubtedly it has become a huge hit for the streaming service and its young stars, Dylan Minnette, Katherine Langford, Justin Prentice, and Alisha Boe, have become huge stars. With all that in mind, a second season makes sense, and THR reports that it’s now a near certainty, with a writers room already set up for season 2. This news also follows on from the announcement that Ross Butler will leave his role on The CW’s Riverdale at the end of season one, owing to his larger, and very similar, role on 13 Reasons Why.

Spoilers ahead..

Owing to the graphic end to 13 Reasons Why, when Hannah’s suicide is shown in detail, a second season will have to take a different approach than the first. Most likely, it will focus on events that unfolded in season one’s finale; namely the fact that Alex was rushed to hospital having supposedly attempted suicide. There is also a chance we might see justice served to Bryce, who raped both Hannah and Jessica and assumed he had gotten away with it.

In fact, there are so many loose ends to tie up that there’s more than enough material there for a second season, even if Asher has already said he wouldn’t write a second novel. The question is, though, does there need to be a season 2? It’s a moot point, in essence, since it’s inevitable, but Hannah’s story was told, and wrapped up. There’s a lot to be said for making a one-off, powerful piece of drama that will then stand the test of time. 13 Reasons Why will have a tough job to make another season of the same caliber, and the pressure will be on to deliver exactly what the fans want to see.
