9. Ride Along 2 – $90 million

Kevin Hart may be the most popular male comedic movie star of the day, but he can’t seem to get his sequels to match their predecessors when it comes to selling tickets.  Ride Along (2014) was a major surprise hit two years ago, a kind of buddy-cop action-comedy we don’t see as much of as we did back in the 1980s and 90s.  The pairing of Kevin Hart with Ice Cube was inspired, and while you don’t hear from many who loved the movie, it was a huge domestic blockbuster when it opened to $41 million, and held well in the coming weekends to earn $134 million total.

When Ride Along 2 opened in the same weekend slot only two years later, the opening weekend dipped slightly to $35 million, but the sequel couldn’t hold as much ground as the first film.  The sequel ultimately skimmed to a commendable $90 million, but ultimately lost one-third of its audience from the first Ride Along.  With the budget for the sequel almost double the cost of the first film, it is unlikely audiences get a Ride Along 3 in two more years.

Next: The sequel has fallen..
